|
Phaco Emulsification
is the latest and most sophisticated method of removing a cataract. The
clouded cataractous lens is extracted by fragmenting it into tiny pieces
with ultrasound energy and aspirated out with a suction device and removed
through a small self sealing wound. |
Advantages of Phaco
Emulsification
-
Stitch
less, Blood less and pain less.
-
Shorter
duration of surgery.
-
Early
rehabilitation.
-
Minimum
post operative restrictions.
-
Earlier
restoration of vision.

| Sovereign
The
Eye Foundation has achieved a new dimention in the field of Cataract Surgery
with the introduction of Sovereign Phaco Emulsification system from
the Allergan. The unique advantage of this machine is that
the surgical time is reduced substantially, the surgical impact on the
eye tissue is minimized and the visual performance of the eye is at its
zenith.
Sovereign
machine, a versatile system is available in high profile hospitals abroad
and is being installed by us for the first time in Tamil Nadu. Major
advancements in this machine are :
It
has 7 Microprocessor chips, which increases the response time of the machine
several folds to the surgeons command. It provides advanced fluidics
and power modulation system, which primarily enhances vaccum and uses very
little or no ultrasonic energy, which in excess can be detrimental to the
internal eye structures and cause edema or other complications. |

FOLDABLE
INTRA OCULAR LENSES
Cataract
extraction by phaco emulsification through a 2.8 mm incision and implanting
a foldable intraocular lens.
The
lens is injected into the eye through a small opening and then it opens
up within the eye like a flower.
Advantages
-
Wound
healing is very fast since surgery is done through a very small key hole
opening.

MULTIFOCAL
INTRAOCULAR LENSES
Latest
foldable intracular lens which takes care of distance vision, intermediate
vision and nearvision, so that patients need not wear any glasses after
the surgery.
Advantages
It
increases the depth of focus and enhances the quality of vision.
Specilised
type of implant for Paediatric cataracts.

What
is Glaucoma ?
| Glaucoma
is a condition where the pressure inside the eye exceeds and damages the
optic nerve fibres which affect the perception of normal central and side
vision. Damage to the optic nerve fibres cause progressive and irreversible

DIABETIC
RETINOPATHY
What
is diabetic retinopathy?
Diabetic
retinopathy is the leading cause of loss of vision in diabetic patients. These are the changes in the retina of diabetic patients. Vision loss can be
restored by timely treatment in some cases, but, in many cases, vision
loss can be partially or fully irreversible.
Who
develop diabetic retinopathy?
-
Any diabetic
patient, even if diabetes is well controlled.
-
Risk increases
with duration of diabetes.
-
Greater
risks are in young insulin dependent diabetes, poorly controlled diabetics,
pregnant diabetics (gestational diabetes).
What
are the symptoms of diabetic retinaopathy?
-
Can remain
asymptomatic even till late stages.
-
Common
symptoms are blurring of vision, floaters and sudden loss of vision.
-
Advanced
diabetic retinopathy can lead to secondary glaucoma causing painful visual
loss.
How
often should a diabetic patient have eye checkups?
-
Once diabetes
has been diagnosed yearly checkups is a must.
-
If diabetic
changes on the retina starts occuring, checkups should be as per the ophthalmologists
advise.
Treatment
for Diabetic Retinopathy
-
Apart
from checking vision and testing glasses, a detailed examination of the
retina is performed after dilatation of the pupil.
-
Fundus
Fluorescein Angiography may be required for some patient in which a dye
is injected into the arm vein followed by taking a series of photographs
of the retina.
-
Laser
photocoagulation
-
Surgery
in advanced stage where removal of clotted blood inside the eye (vitrectomy)
or repair of a detached retina becomes necessary.
Is
laser treatment, a complicated procedure? add fundus - Fundus Fluorecein
Angiography
-
No, it
is a simple, painless, outpatient procedure.
-
There
are no restrictions after the procedure.

| CORNEA
CLINIC |
| Cornea clinic is an integral part
of our hospital. 2.5 million people in India suffer from corneal
blindness. Hence it is absolutely mandatory that early diagnosis
and prompt management be the mainstay.
At The Eye foundation, patients are
examined and those found to have corneal problems are included in the cornea
clinic for treatment and regular follow up. The facilities available
at our cornea clinic include.
-
Complete micro biological workshop including
staining and culture for micro organisms.
-
Usage of adhesives and glues in indicated
cases.
-
Full fledged eye bank associalted with
the hospital whereby donor tissues are collected and availed.
-
Facilities to store the donor corneas
by M.K medias are present.
-
Maintenance of a register enrolling
prospective corneal transplant patients.
-
Ocular surface disorders are handled
with newer grafting techniques with gratifying results.
More specific infromation on corneal transplant
and limbal grafts are detailed below.
We
have well furnished, bath attached rooms with double bed
accomodation at the Eye Foundation. Though most procedures
done here
do not require any hospitalisation, our out patients wanting
to stay
in the hospital are provided these rooms at a very nominal
cost of
Rs.500/- per day for Non A/C Rooms. The A/C Rooms are
provided at a cost of Rs. 1000/- per day.

EYE DONATION
The success of corneal transplantation
depends on the priceless gift of the eyes after death.
The eyes are collected only after
death.
The enucleation process (removal
of eye ball) is done within 6 hours of death.
Diabetes / hypertension or refrative
errors are no bar for eye donation.
Those interested in pledging their
eyes for eye donation could fill up a pledge form availabe in the hospital
and return it to the hospital. The eye bank would send a wallet card
(donor card) whcih serves as a long term reminder fo everyone.
The deceased need not be an eye donor
for eye donation

| COMMUNITY
SERVICES |
| Every third blind person in the
world is an Indian and almost 80% of this blindness is due to cataract.
Majority of our poor patients affected by cataract are unaware of thier
disease and the fact that they can be permanently cured by a simple surgical
procedure. If left untreated, an advanced mature cataract can prove
disastrous and can permanently lead to blindness.
In the last 15 years NETHRA JYOTHI
TRUST has conducted numerous eye camps and school health camps through
its hospitals at Coimbatore and Tirupur. Many economically deprived people
have been restored vision through our eye camps largely conducted with
our own resources.
"PHACOEMULSIFICATION" with
intraocular lens implatation is donw for the deserving poor patients in our regular operation theatre along with the paying patients.
"SUDHARSHANAM" is our endeavour
to enhance our community service activities. A one time payment of
Rs. 7,500/- can be made by any individual or organisation for performance
of a cataract surgery on any specified day for an indefinite number of
years. This amount will be deposited in a separate corpus in a fixed
deposit and the interest generated year after year will be used for doing
free surgery on a deserving poor patient. The donor can also identify
a poor patient every year to benefit from this scheme. Any person
with a monthly family income below Rs. 2,000/- can qualifyfor free treatment
under this scheme. Immediately after the surgery the donor will be
intimated about the name and address of the patient along with his or her
photograph.
Your donation towards this scheme
can be sent to our Coimbatore address., on receipt of which we will send
you an enrollment form.
